New helicopter noise group to convene Tuesday

A new civic group organized to help fight back against helicopter noise is slated to meet for the first time Tuesday in Southold.

Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said that a meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall meeting room.

“The town has been actively pursuing all available options to combat helicopter noise and traffic,” Russell said. “We would like to create a working group to join forces with other East End communities that share our burden.”

In August, over 100 incensed Southold Town residents showed up at a helicopter forum held at the recreation center on Peconic Lane, armed with questions and ready to fight to preserve their quality of life on the North Fork, which they said has been shattered by the steadily escalating procession of helicopters and sea planes that fly overhead at all hours.

The meeting was followed by another town meeting to address the issue in East Hampton.

Russell said last week that Tuesday’s meeting will determine who’s interested in stepping up to join the new committee.
