In the Kitchen: Challah bread French toast, an anytime favorite

By now I’m sure you have figured out which mealtime I’m a huge fan of: breakfast. I can say with great confidence that I am a number one fan of breakfast.

Who doesn’t love all things breakfast? Eggs, toast, fruit, waffles, bacon, pancakes, English muffins, cereal, French toast, coffee, orange juice. It doesn’t stop there. Omelets, blintzes, crepes, egg sandwiches, oatmeal, parfaits, home fries, more fruit, biscuits and gravy, bagels. I could eat this stuff all day.

Why are these wonderful foods strictly limited to breakfast food items? Why can’t I have English muffins at dinner with a hearty spinach and feta egg white omelette, without people thinking I’m nuts. I’ll take a waffle with that too, please. And don’t forget the fruit.

Now, don’t get confused here. I’ll eat eggs for dinner but you won’t catch me eating pizza for breakfast. I’ve heard of this happening and don’t get me wrong it sounds like great fun but I’d like to stick to my favorite mealtime items.

I honestly have no problem eating cereal at any time of the day, even if it’s just a plain bowl of uneventful Wheaties. My husband, on the other hand, just looks at me like I have two heads.

One person I know who will enjoy ‘breakfast’ any time of the day with me is my brother. He is an eggs-at-any-time kind of guy, as long as they are scrambled between cheese and ketchup and stuffed onto an english muffin. My guess is this must be something that runs in the family.

Okay so call us a bunch of crazies but this has got to be the best idea ever. It should be done often, especially for those who don’t always get to enjoy breakfast on a busy morning. Breakfast for dinner. Easy, fun and filled with nothing but goodness.

I am sharing with you my classic recipe for French toast. Nothing fancy, just simple and tasty. Be sure to add your favorite toppings afterwards and serve it alongside your favorite style eggs.

Challah Bread French Toast

Serves: 4

Ingredients
8 slices challah bread, thicker is better
1/2 cup milk
6 eggs
1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2-3 Tablespoons of butter

• In a large shallow bowl beat the eggs and milk. Add the vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. Beat until well combined.
• Heat a large skillet to medium heat. Melt a tablespoon of butter. Dip one pice of bread at a time into the egg mixture, coating each side and allowing the bread to soak in some of the liquid. Allow any excess egg mixture to run off first then place the soaked bread onto the hot skillet allow to brown, 1-3 minutes. Turn and repeat on opposite side.
• After all of the bread has been dipped and browned, top each piece with a pat of butter.

Serve with maple syrup and a sprinkle of confectioners sugar.
