Police: ‘We have a goat in custody’

When the phone rings, Eileen Kreiling, manager of the North Fork Animal Welfare League’s Riverhead animal shelter, never knows what crisis she’ll find on the other end of the line.

But on Monday night, the call took the cake for unusual.

“I got a call from the police department last night, that I had to go pick up a new runaway,” said Kreiling in a Facebook post.

The police, she said, called at 6:30 p.m. “They told me, ‘We have a goat in custody,'” she laughed.

The goat was found on the loose on Reeves Beach in Riverhead, she said.

Once she set eyes on him, Kreiling said, “He is a handsome boy. But I must say the horns were a bit worrisome.”

Safe at the shelter, Kreiling said the goat, a Nubian breed known for being large and long-eared,with a Roman nose, was fed hay and goat food and set up in a pen.

“He’s very sweet with people,” she said. “He’s fine if you go in and pet him.”

The NFAWL has put out a call for anyone who might be missing a goat, to call the North Fork Animal Welfare League / Riverhead Animal Shelter at 631-369-6189 ext. 2.

“We’re hoping someone knows where he belongs. We’d like to find his home and if not, we’ll be getting him a new one,” Kreiling said.
