Cops: Man drove drunk past stop sign in Laurel

A Cutchogue man was cuffed Thursday night after he was caught driving drunk in Laurel, police said.

According to Southold Town police, Erwin Gruber, 42, was arrested at 9:52 p.m. and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, at Peconic Bay Boulevard and Laurel Lane.

Police said Gruber was  heading eastbound on Peconic Bay Boulevard when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Peconic Bay Boulevard and Laurel Lane. He was stopped and upon being interviewed the smell of an alcoholic beverage was detected coming from his breath, police said. After standardized field sobriety tests, police determined that he was intoxicated. Gruber was transported to police headquarters for processing and was held overnight to await arraignment.
