Who let the dogs out? Everyone,  it seems, as a community  came together this week to help dig out the dogs after a blizzard left the North Fork Animal League’s Peconic shelter buried in massive snow drifts.

After the blizzard, the NFAWL put out a call on Facebook, asking for help with digging — and dog lovers turned out in force.

“Thank you to all the volunteers who showed up with shovels,” the NFAWL staff said in a Facebook post this week. “Some of the dogs are already out enjoying the snow. We should be all dug out shortly. Thanks again to all who showed up.”

Added Dawn Bennett, president of the NFAWL board, “We are truly thankful for all that came down. Now the dogs can get out. Social media is just great.”

Gabrielle Stroup of the NFAWL said even in the height of the storm, she and another staffer braved the snow and headed to the shelter to feed and care for the animals. “We stayed with them, then tucked them in for the night,” Stroup said.

She added that anyone who turned out to help should bring their own shovel because they did not have extras.
