Cops: Homeless man found dead in Greenport garage

Update: 10:35 a.m.: The Greenport man found dead last night in a detached garage was homeless, according to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley.

Also, when asked if German Mendoza, 44, had died from the cold, Flatley said while it will be up to the medical examiner’s office to determine his cause of death, “the garage he was sleeping in was not constructed for habitation as it lacked heat or any facilities.”

Tracey Lutz, executive director of Maureen’s Haven, confirmed that Mendoza had been a guest of he homeless program last year but had not come for help this season.

“Maureen’s Haven provides safety and security for the East End’s homeless, particularly in these frigid temperatures. Please call us at 631-727-6831 or come to our day center at 28 Lincoln Street in Riverhead for assistance,” she said.

Original story: A Greenport man was found dead in a Greenport garage last night police said.

According to Southold Town police, German Mendoza, 44, was found dead in a detached garage on Second Street at 11:30 p.m. last night. He was located by a friend who was checking on his well-being due to the cold weather, police said.

The cause of death is not believed to be suspicious, but is under investigation by Southold detectives and the Suffolk County Medical Examiners Office, police said. Notification was made to his next of kin.
