Cyberbullying presentation at Mattituck High School tonight

With an eye toward addressing an issue that has exploded in recent years, Mattituck High School will hold a presentation on cyberbullying for parents.

The event will be hosted by Detective Rory Forrestal of the Suffolk County Computer Crime Unit tonight at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.  Parents are encouraged to bring their child to what proves to be an informative session.

According to a letter sent home to parents, “Todays’ generation is growing up in the ever-changing digital age facing technological challenges that many parents are unaware of.”

As in many other junior/senior high school, “it is clear that our school has students participating in the misuse of technology that could cause them harm emotionally, socially and legally,” the letter said. “In order to avoid the pitfalls of technology and help parents to navigate the dangers it can present, it is strongly suggested that you attend” the presentation tonight.

“We are aware and concerned that a significant number of our students are presently being faced with making choices with the use of technology that challenge their maturity level and decision making ability. Be assured that even if your child is not utilizing technology in an irresponsible or dangerous way, they do know someone who is whether it be a friend, classmate, team mate, or peer. With that in mind, our goal is to educate and protect all of our students and families so that technology is a positive aspect of their lives and not a liability,” the letter said.
