SoutholdLOCAL’s Greenport Election Debate rescheduled to March 13 at Floyd Memorial Library

A debate with Greenport mayoral and trustee candidates scheduled by Southold Local at the Floyd Memorial Library for tonight has been rescheduled for Friday, March 13, from 6 to 8 p.m.

An initial debate slated for tonight was postponed after the National Weather Service  issued a winter weather advisory, in effect from 3 p.m. today through 2 a.m.

The forecast calls for snow, sleet and freezing rain in Eastern Suffolk County, with accumulation of up to three inches and icing. Snow is expected to develop late this afternoon, mixing with sleet and freezing rain this evening, before changing to freezing rain by midnight, and then, over to rain.

Snow-covered surfaces, coated with ice, will make traveling difficult at times, with slippery roads and limited visibility at times, the NWS said.

Mayoral candidates include incumbent Deputy Mayor George Hubbard, Jr., facing off against local business owner Zuleyha Lillis for the seat left vacant by incumbent Mayor David Nyce, who decided against running for re-election this year.

Vying for two open trustee seats are incumbent David Murray, Greenport coach Jack Martilotta, businessman Douglas Roberts, and retired village utilities director and former trustee William Swiskey.

The debate will be moderated by SoutholdLOCAL editor Lisa Finn, who will pose all questions to the candidates.

SoutholdLOCAL welcomes questions from readers and suggestions of topics they’d like to see discussed at the debate. Please send your questions and suggestions in advance to Lisa@SoutholdLOCAL.com. No questions will be accepted on the night of the event.

Election Day will be held on March 18, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with voting at the Third Street Firehouse. Voter registration days will be held on March 5 from 8:30 am. until 5 p.m. and March 7 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Village Hall.
