Boys Lacrosse: Tuckers cruise by Royals in Class C semifinal, 16-8

After Thursday afternoon’s 16-8 victory over Port Jefferson (7-6) at Mattituck High School in the Class C semifinal, Mattituck/Greenport/Southold (11-2) is one win away from being crowned Suffolk County champions — just one year removed from a four-win season.

Only one team stands in the way: Babylon.

The Tuckers’ Timmy Schmidt went absolutely bonkers on Port Jefferson, tying a career-high in goals with seven, giving him 46 on the year, including a nifty around-the-back shot as his body went past the goal; the crowd jumped out of their seats.

“I wasn’t really planning on doing that,” Schmidt said. “I just thought it would be cool to do because I haven’t done it before and there was a huge crowd out here so I thought it would be really sick. Good highlight reel film.”

Though the score may have indicated that the game was a blowout, it was actually 10-7 with three minutes left in the third quarter.

“I was kind of surprised [at how close they got],” Tuckers head coach John Amato said. “But I think we took care of what we needed to. I think the boys having prom today was a little bit of a distraction but there’s no excuse, it’s the playoffs.”

That was as close as Port Jefferson got. The flood gates flew open in the fourth quarter as the Tuckers tallied six goals and put the Royals away for good.

After the game, most of the team sprinted off the field to get in their tuxedos for prom. One player was ready five minutes after the end of the game — no shower needed. Girls were in the streets, prom dresses dragging along the ground, it was time to leave. Nothing like going to prom after the first playoff win in school history.

The Suffolk County Class C championship will be played on Wednesday at Stony Brook University with a start scheduled for 3pm. No. 1 Babylon will be the opponent. Admission is $6.

The Tuckers lost both games against the Babylon Bulldogs during the regular season.
