New restaurant planned for Main Street in Greenport

A new eatery featuring upscale dining could soon be opening its doors on Main Street in Greenport.

The planning board yesterday voted to accept a use evaluation from Carolyn Rusin for a proposal to launch 314 Main Street as a bar, restaurant and second floor apartment; the site was the location of the former Il de Beaute.

Rusin said she has plans for a “new and improved, enhanced space” that will feature indoor and outdoor seating, with parking in the rear. No name has yet been chosen for the restaurant.

Planning board member Pat Mundus said the proposed landscaping was “great” for the parcel.

The goal, Rusin said, is to present an attractive, comfortable, clean and well-maintained eatery with good food, perhaps small plates, and drinks. Amy Martin, representing the applicant, told the planning board that the upstairs apartment would be owner-occupied, “not a dormitory for help” or rented out.

Planning board consultant Glynis Berry said the railings and landing needed some modifications to be handicapped accessible.

A Carpenter Street neighbor asked what hours Rusin would be open; Rusin said she envisioned breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with patrons sitting outside under umbrellas.

Planning board chair Devin McMahon said hours of operation would be included in the site plan.

The neighbor also asked about entertainment. Rusin assured there would be no outdoor speakers or entertainment.

“It’s going to be elegant, with happy people, very nice,” Rusin said.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story said the hours of operation would not be included in the site plan. We regret the error.
