Town employees take the field against Peconic Landing in softball game at Cochran Park

Southold Town employees may soon be taking to the field as a new softball team.

On Thursday, approximately 30 town employees tested the waters as they faced off at Cochran Park against Peconic Landing staffers, who organized the event.

“The game was a blast,” Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell said. Although the town was invited to play only about a week before, they hurriedly got a team together and, without uniforms, borrowed some T-shirts from the local Ospreys.

Of the Peconic Landing team, Russell said. “Clearly they were a well-oiled machine compared to us. It looked like they have been practicing. I don’t know what the final score was. I stopped watching it when they were ahead 15 to 0.”

But, Russell, said, fun was had by all. “This isn’t something I would have supported the employees playing last year. We were still self-insured. But now that we rolled our medical coverage over to Empire, I figured feel free to play with reckless abandon. We’re actually thinking of putting a real team together and searching for our next victim. We figure if we practice hard enough, we can hold any team to 10 runs.”

Added Michelle Tomaszewski, secretarial assistant to the supervisor, “Although the Town of Southold didn’t win, they sure had a great time. It was nice to see all of the different employees interact and just have fun together.”
