Cops: Young Greenport man injured in rollover accident Sunday

Friends and family of Austin Hooks, 19, a 2014 graduate of Greenport High School and star athlete in baseball and basketball, are sending positive thoughts for his swift recovery after a rollover accident in Cutchogue Sunday.

According to Southold Town Police, Hooks fell asleep while driving east on Route 48 at 7:38 a.m. near Cox Lane, drove into the median, and rolled over his vehicle.

He was ejected from the vehicle and taken by Suffolk County aviation to Stony Brook Hospital with unknown injuries, police said. He was alone in the vehicle, police added.

Hooks’ mom Patty said her son was released from the hospital yesterday. “He is very sore and it is going to take a few weeks to get moving back around.” Injuries include a fracture in his lower back and a pulmonary contusion. No surgery is required, she said, “They just take time to heal.”

Reflecting on the accident, his mother said, “He was very lucky. An EMT at the scene said he definitely had an angel on his shoulders.”
