North Fork residents urged to attend helicopter noise rally in East Hampton tonight

As the fight against helicopter noise on the North Fork rages on, residents have been asked to join in a rally tonight in East Hampton to make their voices heard.

According to Teresa McCaskie of Mattituck, who is a member of Southold Town’s helicopter noise abatement committee, she is helping Kathleen Cunningham of the Quiet Skies Coalition to spread the word about how residents can help.

According to Cunningham, the rally is scheduled for tonight at 5 p.m. at East Hampton Town Hall, 159 Pantigo Road, in East Hampton.

“We are encouraging all residents of the North Fork to attend or send emails to the East Hampton town board,” McCaskie said.

The rally, Cunningham said, is meant as a “reminder to the East Hampton Town Board that while we appreciate their efforts to deliver noise abatement for East End residents for this summer, the season has been terrible and we need them to do more.”

A release from the Quiet Skies Coalition states, “A suggestion has been made that because the steady parade of residents suffering from aircraft noise that has appeared before the board in summers’ past has not been seen this season, the problem may be solved.” According to the release, complaints are actually “up”, with new curfews meaning operations are compressed into summer hours, “making this summer the worst on record, in many ways, despite the welcome relief the nighttime curfew brings.”

Residents are also urged to speak at the East Hampton town board meeting, which follows at 6:30 p.m.

“We will continue to fight for the right to the peaceful enjoyment of our homes and properties,” Cunningham said. “This summer has demonstrated that it has never been more important.”
