Planning board renotices Stirling Square hearing, questions raised on parking, inn

The Greenport planning board has re-noticed a public hearing on the site plan application for Stirling Square LLC, where the new American Beech restaurant is sited, with an inn to be located upstairs.

At yesterday’s planning board meeting, Chair Devin McMahon said he’s written a response to concerns raised by residents at last week’s session, concerning parking issues.

According to McMahon, some residents feel parking should be required for the five rooms proposed for the inn; others feel the inn would be exempt from parking requirements. McMahon has sent his response to Village Attorney Joseph Prokop for review.

Proprietor Brent Pelton and Dennis McDermott’s application is for the reconstruction of the first floor restaurant, removal and replacement of the outside area with a pergola, installation of outside seating and a fireplace, and renovation and reconstruction of the second floor space for a new use as a five-room inn.

At yesterday’s meeting, resident Bill Swiskey said in past years, parking has been required for other inn establishments proposed on Main Street.

The property is located at 300-308 Main Street, the site of the former Main, helmed by Chef Keith Luce.

The parcel is located within the village’s historic district and commercial retail zone.

The planning board has determined that a state environmental quality review requires a public hearing, which has been re-noticed or the September 24 work session, which begins at 5 p.m.

Neither McDermott nor Pelton immediately returned a request for comment.
