Fishing report Sept. 5:
Can’t get much better than this

As we start to transition into fall fishing, some of our autumn species are trickling in. False albacore and green bonito have arrived in the rips to the delight of fly/light tackle fisherman all over the North Fork. Cod, bass, blues and fluke are all out in numbers, just beginning to prepare for fall migrations.

One of our readers reached out to me on eelocalreports@gmail.com with a fluke report. Dominic Florenza was out fluking with his daughter Gia on Shinnecock Bay. Gia caught and released two fluke on bait. Thanks for the report Dominic!

Rob Thompson has some good news to report, the falsies have arrived! They have been seen in the area of Plum island. Rob says the fish were feeding all night during the moon and that presented a challenge during the day. Keith Weelock and his daughter, Helen, managed some bass and blues around the rocks on bucktails. Rubin David had a similar trip Saturday. Seals have been around, too. If you see the seals, move. The fish will not be biting. On Sunday’s trip, Captain Rob found them on top, eating peanut bunker and eager for a fly.

The Orient Star IV is reporting continued excellent bottom fishing. Captain Dan says blues are available in the rips with keeper bass mixed in.

Ken on the Brooklyn Girl says it simply doesn’t get much better. All area species found their way to Ken’s deck this week. Ebb tide in local rips gives you your best chance of hooking up a linesider. Ken also reported that there are lots of bunker in the area, but they are not really getting pushed around. The bass seem to be eating butterfish down deep.

Mike Boccio has been busy bottom fishing to the east. Scup, cod and sea bass have been on the menu for the Prime Time III. Cod have been coming in the 5-12 pound range. Scup and sea bass are 2-4 pound range.

This weekend should be great for bottom fishing. The moon is on its third quarter on September 5, resulting in lighter currents, which make it easier to hold bottom. The fish are out there and conditions are just right. Go get ’em and send me some pictures to share at eelocalreports@gmail.com.
