Community comes together to help Greenport man in cancer battle

Kenny White, (center), shown with the aquarium he helped to restore at the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation, is a beloved firefighter and member of the community.

In times of trouble, the community gathers round to help their own.

And when family, neighbors and fellow Greenport Fire Department members learned that their friend Kenny White was engaged in a cancer battle, they came together to try and lend a hand.

To that end, a fundraiser, the “Friends of Kenny White Spaghetti & Meatball Benefit Dinner,” will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Third Street Firehouse. Dinners cost $15 and can be eaten in or taken to go.

White, a lifelong Greenport resident, has devoted years of dedicated service to the Greenport Fire Department since joining in 1971, serving as past chief.

He’s instrumental in organizing the Greenport Fire Department’s annual circus fundraiser, as well as the carnivals and the Christmas Parade.

White also spoke with SoutholdLOCAL recently about the work he poured into helping to refurbish the aquarium at the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation, a project that touched his heart and will help children to learn about marine life in area waters.

All proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will benefit White’s medical expenses. Checks can be made payable to “Friends of Kenny White.” The event will also include a Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle.
