The temperatures may be cooler but at Cutchogue East Elementary school today, thoughts of colorful spring flowers were in the air.

Girl Scout Troop 2971, fifth graders, planted 500 donated tulip bulbs in front of the school, hoping to make the front entrance appear even more welcoming in springtime, when new students turn out to register.

The girls contacted Kurt Weiss in Center Moriches, who donated the bulbs for the community service project. And, with 500 to plant, they reached out to their sister Troop 2971, kindergartners, to help out.

Laughing and learning, the girls enjoyed planting the bulbs and posing happily with wooden tulips, harbingers of springtime and a sea of colorful blossoms.
