Holiday harmonies, barbershop-style: L.I. Sound Chorus performs in Mattituck

The sweet sounds of a cappella four-part harmony, barbershop style, filled the meeting room of Mattituck Laurel Library Sunday afternoon, where the Long Island Sound Chorus, the local chapter of Sweet Adelines International, performed a free concert.

A choral ensemble of two dozen women, performed holiday and seasonal favorites under the direction of Peggy Di Sunno, delighting their enthusiastic audience as much as the singers themselves obviously delight in the performance.

The Long Island Sound Chorus, with its repertoire that includes a mix of show tunes, patriotic songs, gospel melodies and traditional barbershop standards, has been entertaining East End audience for more than 50 years. Sweet Adelines International was founded in Oklahoma in 1945 to give women the chance to learn how to sing barbershop-style harmony and an outlet for performing.

Chorus members, sharply dressed in black pantsuits adorned with purple sequins, gave an hour-long performance, wrapping up with Auld Lang Syne, in which Di Sunno invited the audience to sing along.

“It was a great concert,” library director Jeff Walden said. “We’re so happy to have had them here today,” said Walden, who was named library director in May, adding that he hopes to increase program offerings like Sunday’s concert in the months ahead. “As you can see, it was very well received,” he said, alluding to the good-sized crowd that turned out for the event.
