Southold Town Board wrap-up: May 3

Here’s a summary of key actions taken by the Southold Town Board at its regular meeting yesterday afternoon at Southold Town Hall.

The board:

  • set a May 31 public hearing (7:32 p.m.) on a proposed code amendment to allow smaller housing units at a higher density (up to 36 units on any one site) in order to provide more opportunity for the creation of moderate income housing in Southold;
  • authorized an agreement with Long Island Telecommunications and Electronics Services, Inc. for consulting services to the Southold Police Department, at a rate of $125 an hour (maximum $13,000);
  • authorized the town clerk’s office to advertise to lease office space for the Southold Justice Court;
  • authorized a partnership with Community Action Southold Town to host free computer training courses at the town’s Human Resource Center in Mattituck, with weekly instruction from Peconic Electronics of Orient, which will provide three consecutive six-week courses, Computer 101, Computer 102 and Computer 103;
  • appropriated funds to resurface parking lots at McCabe’s Beach and Kenney’s Beach;
  • approved the use of Strawberry Fields by Gonzalez Men’s Soccer League from May 8 to Nov. 27 for league games;
  • created the position of deputy town planning director and set the salary for the position from $78,976 (entry level) to $92,685 (step 5);
  • appointed two seasonal police officers: Steven Ficner and Shawn Williams;
  • appointed Michael McBride to the position of full-time laborer at the Southold Town Solid Waste District, effective May 7 at a rate of $21.45 per hour;
  • authorized the clerk to advertise for the position of a part-time custodial worker;
  • acknowledged the retirement of Vicki DeFriest as deputy tax receiver;
  • authorized the clerk to advertise for a vacancy on the land preservation committee;
  • increased the number of members on the tree committee from seven to nine and appointed Matt Campbell to the committee;
  • appointed Suzanne C. Rice to the board of ethics;
  • appointed Kristina Gabrielsen to the parks and recreation committee;
  • appointed Doris McGreevy to the land preservation committee; and
  • authorized the route for the Oysterponds Historical Society Heritage Day Parade on July 3.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17 at 4:30 p.m.
