Lighthouse lovers have something new to look forward to on the North Fork this summer.
Orient Beach State Park is expanding is collection of lighthouse replicas, which currently consist of two miniatures — a Bug Lighthouse replica installed a few years ago, and a brand new Orient Point Lighthouse just installed next to the front sign.
“We want to expand it to include all the local lighthouses you can see from the park property,” park supervisor Bill Bohach said. “We’ll probably get one or two done per year.”
Next up is a Plum Island Lighthouse replica that will be ready to be installed within the next few weeks.
The lighthouses are all made by park employees in the Babylon headquarters.
The park is also now a United States Lighthouse Society passport stamp location, where U.S. Lighthouse Society members can get their “passport” stamped as proof that they visited the lighthouses.
“It’s a matter of filling a need,” said park manager Susan Wheeler. “People come in here asking about the lighthouses all the time, and now we can teach them a little bit about them while they’re here if they can’t get out on a boat.”
