North Fork natives: Check out ‘local’ plants that belong in your garden

The North Fork Audubon Society will hold a native plant sale on Saturday and Sunday.

Native plants are adapted to the local climate and soil conditions where they naturally occur, according to botanists. That means that, in addition to being able to easily thrive, these plants provide nectar, pollen and seeds that bring life to a garden through butterflies, insects, birds and other animals.

The sale will feature high quality native herbaceous perennials, grasses and small shrubs grown by Jim Glover of Cutchogue.

Nectar plants will include Tall Joe-Pyweed, drought-tolerant New England Blazing Star, bee-magnet Bradbury Beebalm, honeysuckle vine cultivar Major Wheeler, which attracts hummingbirds and fall-blooming asters like October Skies.

The sale will also include deer-resistant plants that are important nectar sources for bees, butterflies and moths, including three different species of goldenrod, flat-topped white aster and host plants like Butterflyweed, one of the milkweed species that Monarch butterfly larvae need for their survival.

The sale will take place on Saturday and Sunday at The Red House at Inlet Pond County Park 65275 Route 48, Greenport.
