McGann-Mercy musicians earn top honors at two music competitons

Music students from Bishop McGann-Mercy High School entered two music festivals in late May and earned top honors in both.

On Friday, May 20, the McGann-Mercy Jazz Ensemble competed with schools from all over the tri-state area at Six Flags in New Jersey in the Music in the Parks Festival. The Jazz Ensemble placed first overall with a score of 94 out of 100, earning it a “Superior” rating in its division, the highest honor of the competition.

Senior Dale Kelly was individually honored with an award as one of the top overall outstanding soloists in the entire festival; Dale was one of three outstanding soloists chosen out of more than 1,000 students who participated.

It was an incredible honor for the music department and the students to be recognized so highly.

The Voices of Mercy Chamber Choir also competed in a festival, traveling to Busch Gardens in Virginia over the Memorial Day weekend. The choir took first place in its division with a rating of “Superior,” and also won best overall high school choir out of all divisions.
