Readings of ‘Seven,’ a play about ‘remarkable women changing the world’ will benefit local charities

A play written in part by a Cutchogue woman will come alive in Riverhead and Greenport this weekend in a dramatic reading to benefit two local charities.

Gail Kriegel, of Cutchogue, is one of seven award-winning playwrights who crafted “Seven,” which focuses on seven “remarkable women changing the world.” Kriegel also directed the reading, which will be performed tonight and tomorrow.

The show is being presented by the North Fork Reform Synagogue, which has chosen Community Action Southold Town and the North Fork Spanish Apostolate as the beneficiaries of the performances.

“It’s an effort to perform tikkun olam,” said Barbara Sheryll, co-chair of the synagogue’s program committee. Tikkun olam is Hebrew for “repairing the world,” and focuses on acts of kindness. “It’s part of our mission as a reform Jewish congregation.”

The play is a documentary that tells true stories of seven women who “bravely fought for the wellbeing of women, families and children around the world.”

The play focuses on the struggles of the women, such as Marina Pisklakova-Parker, a Russian woman on a crusade against domestic violence or Mu Sochua, a woman from Cambodia who rescued young girls from human trafficking.

Each writer picked one character to develop and write about. Kriegel’s focus was Anabella De Leon of Guatemala, who has dedicated her life to fighting for human rights on behalf of the poor.

The show will be performed tonight at Peconic Landing in Greenport at 7:30 p.m. to benefit C.A.S.T.

“Peconic Landing has been very generous. They sponsored us by donating their location,” Sheryll said.  Tonight’s performance benefits  CAST, which Sheryll describes as “the number-one agency out here acting to help those less fortunate than ourselves. They’re tagline is ‘neighbors helping neighbors’ which encompasses what we want to do,” she said.

It will be read again tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the North Fork Spanish Apostolate, 546 St. John’s Place in Riverhead.

“Sister Margaret does so much good work for the community, and we decided we want to help support her,” Sheryll said.

Tickets will be $20 and can be bought online or on the phone at (631) 722-5712. All proceeds will be donated.
