Winifred ‘Winnie’ Mitchell Lyons, 86

2018_0810_Mitchell-Lyons_Winifred Winifred “Winnie” Mitchell Lyons, 86, of Rockledge, Florida, formerly of Stillwater Avenue in Cutchogue, passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016. Born in Bellmullett, County Mayo, Ireland on December 1, 1929, to Andrew and Bregette Barrett, she was one of nine children. She emigrated to the United States at 20 years of age and proudly became a citizen on January 8, 1965.

She was active in the Red Hat Society, Helping Hands Ministry of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Community and was a volunteer at Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge. Winnie had a smile that would light up a room and a loving Irish humor.

Winnie married Joseph Mitchell and had four children: Paul (Jodie), Linda, Kathleen (Paul) and Joseph (Anne); She has six grandchildren: Paul, Jillian and Patrick Murphy, Megan and Richard Mero of Waterloo, New York and Shannon Mitchell of Breckenridge, Colorado and great-grandchildren Dominique, Davina, and Cadence Mero.

Winnie leaves her husband, Harold “Harry” C. Lyons and seven step-children.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 17 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Graveside services will follow at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue with Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt officiating.
