Local artists decorate wooden buoys for auction at Greenport’s Stirling Historical Society event this weekend

The Stirling Historical Society of Greenport will host its third annual Buoy Auction and Gala at Hanff’s Boatyard in Greenport this Saturday, Oct. 8 from 5-7 p.m.

Wooden buoys decorated by local artists will be auctioned off to raise funds for the society’s continuing effort to preserve the rich and fascinating history of Greenport Village.

The idea of auctioning off hand-painted buoys was originally introduced by Greenport artist Cindy Pease Roe, who had seen similar fundraising events throughout Maine.

Wooden buoys supplied by Joe Henry & Sons at Triangle Sea Sales are painted and decorated by local artists and auctioned off at the gala. This year nearly 20 buoys are slated to be up for grabs.

The gala will feature food from Vanessa Mims’ I Cater 2 U, music by Grant Werner, and oysters and clams from the Southold Fish Market.

Opening bid on the buoys is $100. Tickets to the event are $75 and can be purchased online or in person at Special Effects Salon, 455 Main St. in Greenport.
