Calling all young Greenport thespians! Shakespearean actor Deaon Griffin-Pressley will be holding a free “Scenes and Sonnets” workshop at the high school this weekend.

Griffin-Pressley will teach young actors the ways of William Shakespeare during the four-hour workshop Saturday, with a focus on interpreting, understanding and performing some of Shakespeare’s famous sonnets, monologues and scenes.

The workshop will be offered to all young Greenport thespians, grades seven through 12. File photo.

Shakespeare is not new to North Fork schools. Greenport and Southold schools joined together last year for the “Playing @ Will” festival that culminated in a 40-student production of The Tempest in Southold’s amphitheater (see prior story).

At the performance, David Gamberg, superintendent of both Greenport and Southold schools, said he hopes the festival will grow to be “bigger and better” in future years. John Tramontana, who co-directed the play and teaches Greenport’s bi-weekly Shakespeare class, said this weekend’s workshop is meant to “kick off” the new year for Shakespeare enthusiasts and attract students from other local schools to participate in the festival.

Griffin-Pressley is a graduate of the British American Drama Academy and American Musical and Dramatic Academy and has worked with Shakespeare & Company. His workshop will be held this Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Greenport High School small gym from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All local students grades seven through 12 are invited to attend.
