Wind advisory in effect today and this evening, with gusts up to 50 mph

National Weather Service radar

Winter is back, with cold temperatures, high winds and light snow falling early this morning.

A wind advisory is in effect today until 10 p.m. for Long Island and the New York metropolitan region.

The National Weather Service said west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of up to 50 mph are expected today, with the heaviest winds expected late this morning into early afternoon.

Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees and power lines, the weather service said. Scattered power outages are expected, according to the NWS. PSEG-LI was reporting 26 active outages affecting 98 customers across the island, with none reported in Riverhead or Southold towns.

Snow accumulation won’t be significant on Long Island, limited to a wet dusting, but bands of snow could dump two to three inches in the lower Hudson Valley and interior southwestern Connecticut, the weather service said.

Temperatures today will rise into the low 40s under mostly cloudy skies, according to the NWS forecast.
