Scare at SCCC: Report of ‘shooter’ at college’s eastern campus unfounded

Reports of an “active shooter” at Suffolk County Community College this afternoon are unfounded,  a college spokesperson said.

The campus was on lockdown for approximately 30 minutes after a report was made to campus security about a woman with a gun in a bathroom in the Shinnecock building, said SCCC communications director Drew Biondo.

The report was made at about 2 p.m. and the campus was put on lockdown, but police determined the report to be unfounded, Biondo said.

The lockdown was lifted at about 2:30, Biondo said.

“There was no gun,” he said. He said he believes a student “heard something” and reported it to a professor, who called security.

The scare came on a day that saw more violence at a college campus. At least eight people were injured in an incident at Ohio State University this morning.

“A suspect has been shot and reported deceased,” the university said in a statement. “Victim injuries include stab wounds, injury by motor vehicle and other injuries that are being evaluated.”
