Rep. Lee Zeldin sworn in to second term

Rep. Lee Zeldin was sworn in to a second term of office yesterday in Washington, D.C. by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.

Zeldin took the oath in the presence of his wife Diana, his twin daughters Arianna and Mikayla, his mother Merrill Schwartz and his father and stepmother David and Carol Zeldin.

Zeldin, 36, represent’s New York’s First Congressional District, which takes in all of eastern Suffolk County.

A Shirley resident, Zeldin grew up in Suffolk County and is is a graduate of William Floyd High School, SUNY Albany and Albany Law School. He is a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division and is an active member of the U.S. Army Reserves. He was elected to the N.Y. State Senate in 2010 and to the U.S. Congress in 2014.

Zeldin is one of 241 Republicans in the 435-member House of Representatives, where the Republican party has a 55.4 percent voting majority.

He is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Foreign Affairs and Veterans’ Affairs committees.

He also serves on the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, the Subcommittee on Railroad, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials, the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, and the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade.

Zeldin is co-chairman of the House Republican Israel Caucus, and co-chair of the Congressional Portuguese Caucus.

Following his swearing-in yesterday, Zeldin said in a tweet his is “honored to be sworn in for a second term” and is “looking forward to a great two years ahead.”
