Southold burn victim succumbs to injuries

The Southold woman severely burned on a Southold High School athletic field Jan. 5 has succumbed to her injuries.

Jeanne Caufield, 58, died on Jan. 11, according to a spokesperson at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Southold basketball players and coaches rushed out of the gymnasium to assist Caufield after head coach Lucas Grigonis saw flames outside the school shortly after 6:30 p.m.

Caufield was airlifted to Stony Brook, where she was listed in critical condition.

Police detectives are investigating the incident, which does not appear to be criminal in nature Southold Police Chief Martin Flatley said on the night of the incident.

Caufied’s death was first reported today by The Suffolk Times.
