Are you ready to get your Irish on?

A sure sign that Spring is on its way is the Cutchogue St. Patrick’s Day parade, which will be held on Saturday, March 11 at 2 p.m. in downtown Cutchogue.

One of the most popular on the North Fork, the parade is in its 13th year and features pipe bands, Irish step dancers, community groups and first responders. This year’s grand marshal is local businessman and Vietnam vet George Sullivan of Southold.

The first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in 1762 to celebrate the Catholic feast day of St. Patrick, the missionary who brought Christianity to Ireland in the Fifth Century. Today, parades are held throughout the United States.

This year’s parade, which is sponsored by the North Fork Chamber of Commerce and the Cutchogue Fire Department, begins at the intersection of Main Road and Cox Lane and makes its way west to the village, ending up at the firehouse on New Suffolk Road. The Southold Town Board last week approved road closures for the parade.

All local civic groups and fire departments are invited to participate. For information contact parade chairman Joe Corso at 631 734-5959.
