Mattituck advances to county semifinals with 58-54 win over Port Jefferson

(Updated- Feb. 25) Mattituck defeated Port Jeff 58-54 at Riverhead High School to win the Class BC Championship game.

It was a real rim ringer, as both teams came to play, and what a show the crowd witnessed. Solid playmaking by both teams at either end of the court made the game close and competitive.

Mattituck got into some early foul trouble, but with Coach Van Dood making key substitutions, he was able to keep his core players in the game.

Mattituck grabbed an early lead, but Port Jeff wouldn’t roll over and matched point for point. Mattituck took a 32-29 lead into halftime.

The second half was a different story for Mattituck, as they only mustered four points in the entire third quarter. With Port Jeff taking a 42-36 lead into the fourth quarter, and the clock ticking away on their season, Mattituck buckled down and played some stifling defense, causing numerous Port Jeff turnovers and giveaways.

Mattituck’s Liz Dwyer put the team on her back, and lead the way for the Mattituck girls to steal the victory from a shocked Port Jeff team. Mattituck sealed the victory on two Julie Siefert free throws with seconds left. Corrine Reda was a solid presence in the paint, grabbing rebounds for Mattituck.

Liz Dwyer led the team with 24 points, Corrine Reda and Jane DiGregorio each had 11 points.

Mattituck will face Class A champion Mount Sinai for the small schools champion title on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. at SCCC – Brentwood Sports Arena. Mount Sinai defeated Harborfields last night 54-42.
