The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry of Nassau and Suffolk Counties will conduct a recruitment from April 5 through Sept. 20 for 28 electrician apprentices, one electrician (house or residential) apprentices, and two electrical maintenance technician apprentices, the New York State Department of Labor announced today.
Applications can be obtained and submitted, in person only, at 370 Motor Parkway, Hauppauge, NY, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of each month, excluding legal holidays, during the recruitment period. Applications must be received no later than 12 p.m. on Sept. 20, 2017.
The committee requires that applicants:
- Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required at the time of application.
- Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED), including one year of Elementary Algebra, NYS Math I, or Freshman High School Regents Math. Proof will be required at the time of application.
- Must pass a drug test and a physical exam, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
- Must be a resident of Nassau County or Suffolk County for at least 12 months prior to the date of application. Proof will be required at the time of application.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and related instruction classes.
- Must have a valid NYS driver’s license in order to drive company vehicles.
- Must pass the electrical trades aptitude test.
- Must participate in an interview, if selected.
- Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work required of the trade, which may include:
Climbing and working from ladders, scaffolds, poles, and towers of various heights.
Crawling and working in confined spaces such as attics and manholes.
Must be able to read, hear, and understand instructions and warnings.
- Must provide military transfer card or discharge form DD-214, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
