William “Bill” A. Hands Jr., of Orient, died in Florida on March 9, 2017. He was 76 years old.
He was a Major League Baseball 20-game winner as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs. He owned the Orient Service Station.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 16 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in the Village of Greenport. A 10 a.m. funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 17 officiated by Pastor Garret Johnson of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport. Plans for interment have not been finalized.
The family has suggested that memorial donations be made to the North Fork Little League, P.O. Box 1855, Southold, New York 11971 or the Greenport High School Athletic Department, 720 Front Street, Greenport, New York 11944. Attn: Chris Golden. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
