Town-wide spring leaf and brush cleanup starts in Orient Point April 10

Southold Town’s spring leaf and brush cleanup begins Monday, April 10, Southold Town Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando announced.

The town will begin the annual pickup in Orient Point and work its way west.

Yard debris and branches are to be placed together in orderly piles to enable easy removal by the town highway crews, Orlando said.

The highway chief released a statement of requirements:

The town will not remove stumps, trees or land-clearing debris. Branches must not exceed a length of eight feet. If branches are longer, they will be bypassed.

All leaves must be in biodegradable paper leaf bags. Leaves in plastic bags, as well as loose leaves, will be bypassed.

The Southold Town Compost Facility will be accepting residential yard waste free from Saturday, April 1 through Sunday, May 7. Anyone participating in this five-week grace period program must have a valid 2017 Southold Town disposal permit.

Residents are asked to be prepared on Monday, April 10.

“Once our highway crews have completed a street, they cannot return,” Orlando said. Anyone placing debris out after a street has been completed will be subject to an illegal dumping fine.

Commercial landscaping and tree removal companies are no longer permitted to place branches or yard waste debris in the town right-of-way. It will be the responsibility of the homeowner to make certain that their contractor hauls such debris to the Cutchogue compost facility.

Questions pertaining to the cleanup may be directed to the Southold Town Highway Department at (631) 765-3140 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
