Cops: Speeding vehicle crashes into Greenport cemetery, injuring driver

A vehicle witnesses said was traveling at a high rate of speed on Third Street in Greenport crashed through a wooden fence and into a large monument in Greenhill Cemetery last night, injuring the driver, according to Southold Town Police.

Police were called at about 6:30 p.m. on the report of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Webb and Third streets.

Southold Police said the operator of the vehicle, Timoteo Velasques Ramires, 50, of Greenport, was transported by Greenport Fire Department Rescue to Eastern Long Island Hospital. He was later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, police said.
