The Long Island Railroad has scheduled emergency work at the Silverware Road railroad crossing in Greenport which will require closing of the road on Wednesday, May 17 between 6 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

LIRR workers will be rehabilitating the crossing surface, tracks, steel rails, wooden ties and compacted stone bedding. Motorists seeking access to destinations south of the railroad crossing should plan ahead and pre-park their cars to the north of the crossing in advance of the closure, LIRR officials said in a press release. Pedestrian travel around the crossing will be permitted throughout the work outage.

Buses will substitute for trains between Riverhead and Greenport and LIRR customers traveling to or from Mattituck, Southold or Greenport should plan for additional travel time and be prepared to transfer between trains and buses at Riverhead. The Ronkonkoma Branch’s track will be taken out of service, and vans will substitute for portions of the 2 Ronkonkoma Branch trains scheduled to travel east of Riverhead.
