By the end of 2017, the six people sitting on stage at the Peconic Landing Community Center this afternoon will have lived a total of 600 years.
In their younger days they were craftsmen, business owners, sharpshooters, figure skaters, soldiers and singers. Today, they are celebrating their 100th year of life with friends and family at a group birthday party.
“This is the most exciting day in my life since I got married,” said Sally Haupt, who will turn 100 on November 18.
One by one, Robert Syron, president and CEO of Peconic Landing, introduced the six people, adding a short anecdote about each of them.
Southold Town Supervisor Scott Russell and John Stype, representing Suffolk County legislator Al Krupski, presented proclamations to the six celebrants.
“It’s always a pleasure and an honor to present proclamations,” said Russell. “But to be able to present proclamations to six individuals that are turning 100 is astonishing to me. I can’t think of a supervisor in New York State who has been able to do that, and it’s an honor to me.”
“It really is great that an organization will show this respect to their residents,” said Stype.
After the ceremony, guests were invited to share birthday cake with the residents at a small gathering.
