On Sunday, June 4, Greenport Village will host its first One Greenport Cultural Arts Festival in Mitchell Park.

The multi-cultural festival will feature a Colombian guitar duo, the Greenport High School A Cappella group, gospel singers and a clown. MainStage Dance Academy and a Guatemalan dance group are also scheduled to perform and a display of artwork from Greenport School students will be on display in front of the carousel.

Food will be available from select local restaurants, but people are invited to bring a picnic lunch to the festival. There will also be a soccer tournament later in the day, although details of that have not been finalized.

The festival is being organized by One Greenport, an ad hoc group comprised of volunteers who wanted to see more cross-cultural events in the village.

“We wanted to create a pleasant holiday-like occasion, bringing together the various communities of Greenport,” said committee member Dinni Gordon, who came up with the idea for the festival.

Greenport Village trustee Doug Roberts, who is also on the committee, added, “We were looking to provide an opportunity for people to get to know each other who might not otherwise connect.”

Greenport School superintendent David Gamberg has worked closely with One Greenport to include local students.

“My hope for the One Greenport Cultural Arts Festival is that it will continue year after year as an opportunity to showcase the diversity and harmony of the Village of Greenport,” said Gamberg.  “The school is a big part of the community and is a family that allows children to celebrate their rich cultural heritage from so many parts of the world.”

The festival runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on June 4 in Mitchell Park. Rain date is June 11. For updates and details, visit One Greenport Cultural Arts Festival’s Facebook page.
