Fitness trends: Spin your way to good health

Group exercise is an easy way to get yourself motivated if you’ve been falling behind on your workout. Not only does it give you an opportunity to train with the guidance of professionals, but research shows that working out in a group leads to longer and more successful workouts.

Spin, an indoor cycling workout, is quickly climbing the charts of popular fitness trends and has become the latest craze in group-exercise at pretty much any gym, including several on the North Fork.

“It’s kinda like an addiction,” said April Yakaboski of Aerial Fitness in Riverhead, which recently started offering spin as part of its fitness repertoire.

“It’s high energy and really gets your endorphins going,” said Yakaboski, adding that she didn’t love spin at first, but it grew on her rapidly.

Yakaboski said she started offering spin last year because of its popularity at gyms across the country, but decided that she wanted to provide something even more cutting edge. To do this, she purchased Real Ryder Bikers, which provide side-to-side motion.

“We wanted to provide a full-body work out,” said Yakaboski, who said she will also soon be offering hour-long spin classes that are coupled with stretch and sculpting workouts.

Aerial Fitness is certainly not alone in offering spin to its customers. In fact, there are five area fitness studios offering spin. Check out their schedules below and find a class that suites your needs.

Grab your water bottle and a towel and hit up one of these spin classes for a great, sweaty workout.
