The mood was festive at the Kapell Gallery in Greenport Saturday night as art lovers gathered for a new show by a Bronx artist who has spent his career capturing the people and streets of New York City.

Plein air artist Daniel Hauben’s new show, “No Place Like Home,” opened with a reception at the Kapell Gallery Saturday night. The exhibit will run through Sept. 30.

In one room, Hauben’s “sensitive and colorful renderings of the people and streets of New York,” are exhibited, according to gallery owner and former Village of Greenport Mayor David Kapell. “These paintings vividly capture a special moment in the time and space of an ever-evolving city. In the second room we will showcase his beautifully rendered pastel landscapes.”

Paintings range in size from 9″ x 12″ to six feet x 10 feet. Aigned and numbered prints are for sale at the exhibit.

Hauben was found Friday at Hanff’s Boatyard in Greenport, capturing the waterfront. The artist said he’d never heard of Greenport until he met Kapell at an exhibit at Bronx Community College North Hall and Library in 2012, and the idea for a North Fork exhibit was born.

A New York Times review of that exhibit said, of Hauben, “He is, in deference to his favorite painter, a kind of ‘Bruegel of the Bronx’.”

Although he at first considered setting up on Front or Main Street, the “quintessential vortex” of ithe village to capture the essence of Greenport, Hauben said the waterfront was the perfect spot.

“It’s not just a port, it’s a workplace. You can feel the history here,” he said.

When he travels, Hauben said rather than take the “if it’s Tuesday, it must be Belgium” approach, embarking on a whirlwind, touristy journey, instead, he likes to stay in one spot, breathing in the sights, sounds and smells of a locale.

Hauben, who has had over 30 national and international solo exhibitions, including The Bronx Museum of the Arts and the American Embassy in Berlin, is a recipient of the Edgar Alan Poe Award for Artistic Excellence from The Bronx County Historical Society, an eight-time winner of the BRIO Award from the Bronx Council on the Arts, and has been awarded artistic residencies in Spain, Germany, Costa Rica, Virginia, Connecticut and California.

He has taught at the Art Student’s League and the CUNY Graduate Center, and currently teaches at the CCNY Spitzer School of Architecture and the Riverdale YM/YWHA. His public art projects include The EL@ for the New York MTA’s Arts For Transit program, and a 22 painting commission entitled “A Sense of Place” for the new Robert AM Stern library on the campus of Bronx Community College. His work is in the collections of The White House, Library of Congress, Museum of the City of NY, New York Historical Society, Harvard University, Zimmerli Art Museum, among others.

By Saturday’s opening, Hauben’s pastel rendering of Greenport was complete and captured the history and maritime essence of the village.
