Almost ten hours after the entire Village of Greenport lost power on Thursday, crews were still working furiously at the power plant on Moores Lane that were still without electricity at dinnertime.

According to Darry Baumer, who was at the plant, “localized outages” still existed. “We’re working as hard as we can. Crews will stay on until this is done. A very small percentage of poeple are without power right now. Most of the village is back online right now.”

Baumer said although it seems a relay at the plant “had gone bad”, that had not yet been one hundred percent confirmed. “We’re still researching what went wrong,” he said.

Village Clerk Sylvia Pirillo also said there was “an issue with a relay. We’re isolating the problem and we hope to have the power on quickly.”

Initially, village officials anticipated only a “two hour, maximum delay,” Pirillo said.

Village officials also asked residents to turn off any unnecessary appliances until all the power was restored.

Residents first lost power at arount 8 a.m. Thursday morning.

Southold Town police confirmed that there had been power outages “on and off” all monring

The entire village, village resident John Mantzopolous said, had been affected. Businesses such as 7-Eleven were closed, and traffic lights were out, he said.

“People were coming out to see if it was widespread or just in their isolated homes,” he said.

At Eastern Long Island Hospital, staff worked to keep operations running smoothly while power was intermittent. “We’re doing okay,” said Pat Pifpisa, vice president of patient care services. “We kept our generator on, just to be safe, and are running it now simultaneously with the power, which is back on at the moment. It has gone on and off.”

Mayor David Nyce did not return calls on Thursday for comment.
