A “suspicious package” received at the Plum Island facility in Orient Wednesday night turned out to be a false alarm, police said.
According to Southold Town police, Plum Island security officers contacted authorities Wednesday night at 10:35 p.m. to report the suspicious parcel, which had been received through UPS at the facility, located on Route 25 in Orient.
Southold Town police responded to the Plum Island facility for investigation, and Suffolk County Emergency Service was also called in to assist. Emergency services operations found the package to contain maintenance supplies and not to be hazardous, police said.
