Greenport High School BOE hires new interim principal

The Greenport Board of Education has hired a new interim principal to replace Len Skukkevig, who will be leaving to take on a position as Shelter Island school district superintendent.

BOE member Heather Wolf confirmed Wednesday that Robert Feeney has been hired, effective Aug. 27, at a rate of $550 per day.

Meanwhile, Greenport bids adieu to a well-loved principal.

“I have been offered the position of Superintendent of Schools of the Shelter Island UFSD,” Skukkevig said in July. “We have not finalized a contract yet, so I am afraid I can not offer you any details at this time.”

However, Skuggevik said he’s enthusiastic about the road before him. “I am extremely excited about my new mission ahead. The fact that I still get to be around the students is the best part. It isn’t often that superintendents are still able to interact with students and get to know them personally and be involved in their lives. I have heard wonderful things about the community of Shelter Island and I am anxious to meet the students, their families, the faculty and staff. I look forward to becoming an active member in the community, and continuing down the path that the district has begun.”

Wolf said she and other board members received an email in July with the news.

“We’re still in the early stages of trying wrap our heads around what’s next,” Wolf said after learning the news that Skukkevig was leaving. “But we can only be happy for him. It’s a wonderful recognition of him and it’s nice that he’ll still be close by.”
