Outgoing Greenport principal ‘excited’ about new post

As Greenport prepares to bid adieu to a well-loved principal, Len Skukkevig speaks out on his new post.

“I have been offered the position of Superintendent of Schools of the Shelter Island UFSD,” he said in an email Tuesday. “We have not finalized a contract yet, so I am afraid I can not offer you any details at this time.”

However, Skuggevik said he’s enthusiastic about the road before him. “I am extremely excited about my new mission ahead. The fact that I still get to be around the students is the best part. It isn’t often that superintendents are still able to interact with students and get to know them personally and be involved in their lives. I have heard wonderful things about the community of Shelter Island and I am anxious to meet the students, their families, the faculty and staff. I look forward to becoming an active member in the community, and continuing down the path that the district has begun.”

Former Greenport Board of Education president Heather Wolf confirmed the news on Monday.

Wolf said she and other board members received an email last last week with the news. No decisions have yet been made on Skuggevik’s replacement, Wolf said, adding that a special meeting of the board will be held on Aug. 4 to discuss options.

“We’re still in the early stages of trying wrap our heads around what’s next,” Wolf said in an interview Monday. “But we can only be hapy for him. It’s a wonderful recognition of him and it’s nice that he’ll still be close by.”
