Porters recognized in New York State as good sports

It’s official: The Porters are good sports.

According to Greenport Union Free School District’s Athletic Director James Caliendo, the Greenport athletic program has been recognized as a school that “promotes good sportsmanship” by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

The NYSPHSAA, he said, has a program called “Stay In The Game”. This program “recognizes schools that have gone the entire year without a disqualification by an athlete or coach for unsportsmanlike behavior during the entire school year. Greenport has a banner in the Richard ‘Dude’ Manwaring gymnasium that says ‘Stay in the Game’ and now we have a 2013-14 sticker recognizing us a a school in New York State that has good sportsmanship for that entire year,” he said.

According to the NYSPHSAA website, both NYSPHSAA and Time Warner Cable Sport Channel both “are proud to be able to provide this wonderful recogniton program to our member schools. Sportmanship is considered the foundation of a strong and healthy interscholastic athletic program. Promotion of positive sportsmanship is the goal of all interscholastic athletic programs and can only be obtained by administrators, coaches, students, officials, parents and spectators working together to foster healthy interscholastic experience.”
