The top male and female finishers in the North Fork Environmental Council’s First Annual Earth Day 5K were both Southold locals: Jason Leonard, 46 and Indira Schwartine, 33, were first across the finish line this morning at Indian Island County Park.
Leonard finished the run in 21:07 and Schwartine did it in 22:48. Schwartine finished third overall, behind Leonard and second-place Justin Zhang, 13.
In addition to the 13-year-old Zhang, the top 10 finishers included 76-year-old Sean McGahan of West Islip in seventh place (24:15) and 55-year-old Gil Cardillo of Riverhead (23:09).
McGahan was the oldest finisher in the race. The youngest was 5-year-old Julianna Witczak of Cutchogue, who placed 96th out of the 98 people to cross the finish line.
The Indian Island course, though flat, was challenging, starting out on pavement near the playground and transitioning to an unpaved surface that is soft and sandy in many places as the course made its way out to the point and back.
The Earth Day 5K benefitted the North Fork Environmental Council’s environmental education programs and scholarship fund.
