‘Sherlock Holmes and the Long Island Cave Mystery’ at SCHS Book and Bottle talk, October 27

Put on your deerstalker and grab your meerschaum pipe before you head out the door to this Sherlock Holmes related event.

The Suffolk County Historical Society will present Harrison Hunt and his “Sherlock Holmes and the Long Island Cave Mystery” in its Book and Bottle talk on Thursday, October 27 at 6 p.m.

In his 1911 short story “The Red Circle,” Sherlock Holmes meets a Pinkerton detective in London who hails as the “hero of the Long Island Cave Mystery.” Though for many years it was believed that no caves existed on Long Island, a researcher discovered in 2006 that there was indeed a cave mystery in the Islip area in 1891 involving theft, a planned kidnapping, and a series of underground bunkers described in period newspapers as caves. In this fascinating overview of this little-known episode in Long Island history, including illustrations of the key sites involved, local historian and Sherlock Holmes enthusiast Harrison Hunt will uncover additional details about this mystery and reveal the Islip farm where the caves were located.

Author Hunt is the retired Senior Curator of History and Supervisor of Historic Sites for the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums. He has prepared numerous articles and exhibits about Long Island history and co-authored the recent book “Long Island and the Civil War” with Bill Bleyer. An avid Sherlockian for years, Mr. Hunt has also written a number of articles about Sherlock Holmes and his world and is a member of the Baker Street Irregulars.
