George J. Goettelmann of Riverhead died June 15, 2017 at his home. He was 97 years old.
He was born in New York City on December 22, 1919 to George and Julia Goettelmann. He was a graduate of Jamaica High School and Pratt Institute. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1945.
He worked as an insurance broker for AE Goettelmann and Company. He was on the board of directors of State Bank. He was a past member and president of Strathmore Country Club, a past member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the NYS Movers and Warehouse Association. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, golf and doing home renovations.
Predeceased by his first wife Harriet and his sister Julia, he is survived by his wife Anna Marie of Riverhead, his children Georgette Hespos of Wading River, Lawrence of Glen Cove, George of Palm Gardens, Florida, Ellen Palmedo of Remsenberg and Robert of Sea Cliff, by 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, June 19 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home. A service will be held at 1:30 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
