Police have identified a third subject involved in the Southold shooting case, according to Southold Town Police Chief Martin Flatley, who said that the individual was injured with a non life-threatening gunshot wound an is currently in custody.
“He, along with the two subjects referred to as ‘being detained’ earlier have been arrested and are being held at police headquarters in connection with this shooting case,” Flatley said in a statement Tuesday night. “The names of the three arrested subjects will follow tomorrow. This investigation is still very much active.”
Flatley said earlier that the two men shot early Tuesday on South Harbor Lane were not inside the residence at the time. “It was not a home invasion. It occurred outside of the residence. We are still investigating the motive behind these assaults,” he said.
The two men were shot on South Harbor Lane in Southold early Tuesday morning, Southold Town Police said in a press release.
Police responded to a 911 call at 12:23 a.m. reporting two male subjects that were the victims of an assault at an address on South Harbor Lane. Arriving officers found two male victims of gunshot wounds; one also had a severe laceration, according to the police report.
Both were transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment.
Responding officers located a vehicle in the vicinity of the residence with two occupants inside. Both occupants were taken into custody by officers as part of the investigation, police said.
Several neighbors in the area near the intersection of South Harbor Lane and Main Road, said this morning they heard the gun shots that resulted in the shooting of two men early this morning in Southold.
“I thought they were fireworks,” one neighbor said, adding the sound spooked the herd of sheep abutting Catapano Farms. Another neighbor said he did not hear the shots, but said he heard what sounded like deer running through his yard in the direction of Triangle Park, also known as Lower Road.
Police did not immediately release any additional details on the incident.
A man at the residence where the shootings were reported outside opened the door Tuesday afternoon and refused to answer any questions about the incident.
